Academic & Professional Biography
Emeritus Professor Desmond Cahill, a distinguished academic, has been a pioneering force in cross-cultural, immigrant, and interfaith studies for nearly five decades. Educated in Australia and Italy, Dr. Cahill became Professor of Intercultural Studies at RMIT University, Melbourne in 1993. His Ph.D. explored family environments and bilingualism in Italo-Australian children, a theme that would resonate throughout his career.
In October 2021, he was unanimously elected by the 22 member nations, led by India and China, as Moderator of Religions for Peace Asia. Religions for Peace Asia encompasses 52 per cent of humanity.
Academic Leadership & Course Innovation
- Course Development: Designed the Associate Diploma of Ethnic Studies (1981), Bachelor of Arts (Multicultural Studies) (1986), and co-developed the BA (International Studies) in 1997, which became one of the top-ranking programs in Victoria.
- Specialized Programs: Instrumental in establishing Vietnamese and Greek programs at the Phillip Institute of Technology, later merged with RMIT, leading to significant initiatives like the RMIT campuses in Vietnam and the RMIT Greek Centre.
- Graduate Programs: Managed diplomas focused on teaching English as a second language (TESL) and languages other than English for primary education.
- Doctoral Mentorship: Successfully supervised 24 doctoral and master students, including prominent international scholars from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, China, and Greece.

- Global Interfaith Leadership: Chaired the Australian chapter of Religions for Peace and served on the executive committee for the Asian Conference of Religions for Peace, elected Moderator in 2021.
- Policy Recommendations: Led major national projects including Religion, Cultural Diversity and Safeguarding Australia (2004) and contributed extensively to Catholic-Muslim reconciliations.
- Police & Community Advisory: Served on the Victoria Police Multifaith Advisory Council and contributed to anti-racism research initiatives.
Community Contributions & Human Rights
Dr. Cahill was honored with the Medal of the Order of Australia (2010) for his contributions to intercultural education and interfaith initiatives. He was the key organizer of the 2009 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Melbourne, fostering global interfaith dialogue. Additionally, he collaborated with the Australian Human Rights Commission on Freedom of Religion in 21st Century Australia (2011).
Engagements & Reports on Child Abuse
His work extended to addressing clerical sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, presenting reports and submissions to the Parliamentary Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and other Non-Government Organisations (2013) and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (2017). In 2021, he delivered expert testimony to the New Zealand Abuse in Care Royal Commission.
